Cairo & Alexandria

One of the most famous destinations in the world. The famous historical wealth, the mythical treasures, the natural beauty of the country but also the special culture of the Egyptians attract millions of visitors each year. Cairo, one of the largest cities in the world, with the great Egyptian Museum, the countless mosques, the famous bazaar of Khan el-Khalili and the nearby Giza Pyramids, and the historic city of Alexandria with the famous lighthouse, are the two major destinations in the country. Life experience is undoubtedly a cruise on the Nile, with its main stations Luxor-Karnak, Valley of Kings-Valley of Queens, Edfu-Esna-Kom Ombo, Aswan-Abu, Sibel-Botanical Garden. The areas that have been developed on the shores of the Red Sea offer perhaps the best diving centers in the world. Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are among the most popular resorts in the Red Sea and have the largest tourist development. The best time to visit Egypt is the spring, so the temperatures are softer and the waters are ideal for diving, water sports and swimming.

2nd Day

Cairo – Alexandria – Cairo

After our breakfast we will be transported by coach to Alexandria. Alexandria, the second largest city in Egypt, stretches 20 km along the coast. It was founded in 332 BC by Alexander the Great and came to rival Rome before declining in the 4th century AD. In the 19th century, Pasha Muhammad Ali gave new life to the port, connecting it to the Nile. Its wealth attracted thousands of Europeans who cultivated a decadent atmosphere as described by Constantine Cavafy. This era ended in the 1950s when foreigners left after Nasser's revolution. Our first stop, in the Karmous district, the Pompey’s Pillar (column). The granite column of Aswan, 27 meters high, was erected in 297 AD in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian. On its base there is the Greek inscription «to the fairest of emperors, the divine protector of Alexandria, Diocletian the invincible, Postumus, prefect of Egypt». The name of the monument possibly comes from the travelers of the Middle Ages who thought that the Roman general Pompey, who was murdered in Egypt in 48 BC, was buried here. To the south of Pompey's Pillar, are the Catacombs of Alexandria (Kom El Shoqafa). They date from the 2nd century AD. and is the largest Greco-Roman necropolis in Egypt. The tombs are carved into the rock at a depth of about 35 meters and are found on three levels. Next we will cross the imposing waterfront promenade (corniche) to end up at Qaitbay Citadel. The citadel was built in the 1480s by Sultan Qaitbey (1468 – 1496) on the site of the Lighthouse, with stones from the demolished building. Next we will visit the library of Alexandria, which was founded in the 3rd century and was the largest library in the ancient world, where wise men of all nationalities flocked. Then we will visit the Roman amphitheater of Kom el-Dikka. In 1965 when a Napoleonic fortress was demolished to build housing in the Kom el-Dikka area, a semi-circular Roman amphitheater was discovered. The 13 rows of marble seats discovered by the archaeologists date back to the 2nd century AD. Return to Cairo, overnight at our hotel.

3rd Day

Cairo – Archaeological Museum – Giza Pyramids – Sphinx – Khan El-Khalili Bazaar – Luxor

After breakfast we start our tour from the archaeological Museum with the Pharaonic masterpieces of untold value. Today all the greatness of an ancient civilization is presented before us. We continue with the Pyramids of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the world, and the huge and enigmatic Sphinx and finally we will visit the perfume and papyri workshop. Next we meal in a traditional luxury restaurant and immediately after we will visit the picturesque oriental bazaar of Khan El-Khalili. Here we will be able to buy fabrics, leathers, goods, silver, gold and other items. After the end of the tour, transfer to the airport and flight to Luxor. Arrival in Luxor, check-in at the hotel, overnight stay.
4

4th Day

Luxor – Nile Cruise

After our breakfast we start the guided tour of Luxor which brings to mind the greatness of Ancient Egypt. Visit to the east bank with the famous temples of Luxor, built by Pharaohs Amenhotep III and Ramses II and dedicated to the god Amon Ra. Then passing the avenue with the statues of the Sings we will arrive at Karnak to admire the temples of Ammon, Mut and Khonsu. Next we will pass to the west bank, to ancient Thebes, the city of the dead. In the Valley of the Kings there are more than 60 tombs, the main ones being those of Tutankhamun, Seti I, Ramses II, and Nefertiti. We continue with a visit to the three-story temple of Hatshepsut, the only female pharaoh, and the colossus of Memnon, the two huge sitting statues. Overnight on the cruise ship.
5

5th Day

Nile Cruise – Edfu – Nile Cruise

Our ship sails in the calm waters of the «God of the Nile». Passing by the key of the Nile, the dam of Esna, the point where the level of the river changes, we will reach Edfu. The temple of the god Horus, temple of the sun hawk, protector of the Pharaohs, which we will visit, is probably the best preserved in Egypt. Overnight on the cruise ship.
6

6th Day

Nile Cruise

As today our cruise ship heads for Nubia, the sandy shores with their calm monotony are succeeded by the cascading green levels of the cultivated land. The temple of Kom Ombo, the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus, will give us their own unique images. We continue our journey to Aswan. Overnight on the cruise ship.
7

7th Day

Abu Simbel – Aswan

Very early in the morning we depart by coach for the guided tour to the temple of Abu Simbel. Since 1968 the two speys of Ramses II and Nefertari have been cut into pieces, strengthened, dismantled and reconstructed on top of a mountain in the Libyan Range, at a point just above the Nile. On the south speys of the temple of Ramses II, you can admire the four colossus of the powerful pharaoh looking east. The king of Egypt smiling on his throne wears the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, while at his feet stand his subjects, much smaller princes and princesses, the queen mother and the royal wife Nefertari. In the temple of Nefertari, the same pattern of the colossus of Ramses II is repeated, only here the colossus have been replaced by statues of the great royal wife Nefertari in the attire of Hathor-Sothis and their children. Afterwards, we will visit the islet of Philae to see the famous temple of Isis. The huge dam that regulates the flow of the Nile and the scenic felucca rides along the botanical garden overlooking the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan complete our impressions. Overnight on the cruise ship.

8th Day

Aswan – Cairo – Athens

Early morning wake up and transfer to the airport to catch the flight back to Athens via Cairo.
