Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country located in southern Europe, founded in 1143, occupying a total area of 92.212 sq. Km. The mainland is located at the southwest end of the Iberian Peninsula and bordered to the north and east with Spain , while it lies in the west and south of the Atlantic Ocean. The Portuguese climate is characterized by mild winters and pleasant summers, but it varies from region to region. Portugal has 10,6 million inhabitants (2011) and a population density of 115,4 inhabitants / sq. Km with the largest concentration of population along the coastal zone. Lisbon – is the capital of the 13th century AD. and the largest city with about 500,000 inhabitants, 3 million in the Greater Lisbon area. Porto – it is the second largest city, from which the Latin name Portus Cale was the name of the country. The city has about 240,000 inhabitants, 1.5 million in the greater area of Porto.

Tour Plan

1

1st Day

Athens – Lisbon – Fatima – Batalha – Coimbra – Porto

Meeting at the airport and direct flight to Lisbon. Arrival in Lisbon and departure by road to Porto. Our first stop is the great center of Catholicism, Fatima, located 142 km. north of Lisbon. Fatima took its name from the appearance of the Virgin Mary in 1917 to three peasant children in the “Cova Da Iria” valley and has since emerged as the location with the largest pilgrimage attendance in the world. Our second stop is the temple of Batalha, a world cultural heritage monument under the protection of Unesco. Then our next stop is Coimbra, the first University Campus in Portugal and one of the oldest in the world, where we will tour the University area and the streets of the city of poets with its much-sung Montego River. We will also find ourselves in the courtyard of the church of Santa Clara La Nova where we will have a panoramic view of the entire city of Coimbra. Check-in at our hotel. Then departure for Porto, a city that represents tradition, human values, hard work and the strength of the soul of the Portuguese nation. The city also gave its name to the famous wine of the same name “Porto” which is produced from the cultivation of grape varieties following the guidance of a British community that developed in the city’s port. Overnight stay.

2nd Day

Porto

After breakfast, we will take a tour of the impressive city that is built on the banks of the Douro River and harmoniously spreading into the hills, still preserving its medieval view. In the Ribeira region, along the river, the old quarters with the many traditional shops and the open market located on the quay, where they previously loaded the homonymous wine into the characteristic boats, extends along the river. In the upper city, we will take a tour in the Cathedral area and the old railway building. Then we will visit the golden church of Saint Francis and the Bolsa Palace, home to the Chamber of Commerce and formerly the stock market. Finally, we will visit an old winery in the city, where for many years the famous “PORTO” wine matures and we will have the pleasure of tasting in the specially made “calice” glass with its wonderful flavor and its rich aroma. Afternoon free. Overnight stay.

3rd Day

Porto – Braga – Guimaraes

After breakfast we depart for a day trip to the province of Miniu. The first stop of our journey will be Braga where we will admire the cathedral and the sanctuary of Jesus showing important Baroque-style samples. Then we will visit Guimaraes the cradle of the Portugal nation, which was the first capital of Portugal. It is the birthplace of the Portuguese nationality as well as the city where the first king of Portugal was born «Alfonso A». We will see the castle of the region and the historical center, which are Unesco monuments of historical heritage. Return to Porto. Overnight stay.

4th Day

Porto – Aveiro – Nazare – Obidos – Lisbon

Departure in the morning to Lisbon. Our first stop is in the city of canals, the “Venice of Portugal” Aveiro, where we will admire the boats that resemble traditional Venetian gondolas. Then we will go to the tourist fishing village of Nazareth. An experience that will remain unforgettable due to the warmth and liveliness you will receive from its inhabitants as well as the unique feeling that creates a small village that is impregnated with tradition and where we will have the chance to taste the local cuisine. Finally we will also visit the beautiful medieval village of the artists of Obidos. We walk in narrow streets between white houses decorated with colorful flowers and enjoy a panoramic view of the 13 m high walls surrounding the village. Arriving late in the afternoon in Lisbon and arranging at the hotel. Overnight stay.

5th Day

Lisbon

Today's tour is dedicated to the picturesque and hospitable city, which, despite the persistent raids of the Barbarian peoples for many centuries, still maintains its Latin glorious character. One of the most famous sights of the city and probably the most beautiful and elaborate in the world is the Museum of the Royal Carriages, where we will admire a unique collection of luxury and wealth dating back to the 17th and 19th centuries. We will visit the Hieronymus Monastery, the most impressive symbol of Portuguese power and wealth, built in 1502 on the orders of King Manuel I to commemorate Vasco da Gama's memory for his successful return from India. Finally, we will visit the Monument to the Discoveries as well as the characteristic Belem Tower, from where the Portuguese sailors started for the ends of the earth. This famous tower, which looks more like a tiny castle, was built in 1515 near the shores of the Tejo River to protect the estuary of the river and has been designated by Unesco as a World Heritage Site. In the evening, we suggest you enjoy the traditional Portuguese fado songs that have been popularized all over the world by renowned singer Amalia Rodriguez. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.

6th Day

Lisbon (free day)

Today we have a free day to enjoy the city. Opportunity to wander through areas such as Baixa Chiado, Alfama, the Castle of São Jorge, and Barrio Alto. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.

7th Day

Lisbon – Sintra – Cascais – Estoril – Cabo da Roca – Park of Nations – Athens

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for a very enjoyable excursion in the outskirts of Lisbon, Sintra summer residence of the kings, Cascais is a beautiful fishing village, Estoril the tourist resort of Portugal and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of the European continent and Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean. Return to Lisbon where we will end our current excursion to the Park of Nations, which was built for the International Exhibition Expo 1998 from where we can admire the bridge Vasco da Gama. In the same park there is the Oceanario Arrival at Lisbon airport and full of memories we fly back to Greece. Arrival in Athens.
