Zakynthos, is the southernmost island of the Ionian and the flower of the East or the Fiore di Levante, as the Latins called it. Zakynthos is the third largest island of the Ionian Islands, after Kefalonia and Corfu, occupying an area of 406 sq. Km. Here the Greek and Italian education and art met, testimonies of which we find at every step. The idyllic beaches of the island, the rocky shores, the impressive sea caves attract the admiration of the island’s visitors. Here you will also find some of the most famous beaches of the Greek islands, such as the Shipwreck, Laganas, Volimes with the Blue Caves and many more. The island is one of the last shelters of the Caretta-Caretta sea turtle and the Monachus Monachus Mediterranean seal. The climate of Zakynthos is a mild Mediterranean with many rains from November to January and great sunshine all year round. The island has rich vegetation, forests with coniferous trees and wild plants, as well as olives, pine forests and aquatic plants on the coast. Zakynthos is considered an island with a long musical tradition. Zakynthians, especially music lovers, often form well-singing groups – companions who sing old local songs and mostly serenades. The island has a remarkable musical tradition and peculiar local religious ceremonies. Named Zakynthian products are Verdea wine, extraordinary oil cheese, nougat and colognes. It is the homeland of our national poet Dionysios Solomos who wrote the National Anthem of Greece and Andreas Kalvos. It is the place where Grigoris Xenopoulos lived and many other personalities of our modern history.
