Skiathos is the closest to the mainland from the islands of Sporades. It is 41 nautical miles from the capital of the prefecture of Magnesia, Volos and just 2.4 miles from the shores of southern Pelion, east of Skopelos at about 6 nautical miles and the area of the island is 48 sq. Km. Skiathos has been inhabited since prehistoric times and since ancient times until today it has always been called Skiathos. It is the birthplace of Alexander Papadiamantis, one of the most important Greek writers. Papadiamantis House-Museum is one of the most important sights of the island and you will find it in Chora. And in his short stories you will find another island: the authentic Skiathos of the 19th century.
