Santorini, Thira or Stroggili (former name) is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, the Cycladic islands, south of Ios and west of Anafi. There are 128 nautical miles from Piraeus. Its area is 76.19 square kilometers. Today Santorini is one of the most famous tourist centers in the world. She is known for her volcano. The last volcanic activity was the year 1950. Santorini’s special physiognomy contributes to an extremely important archaeological richness: the Ancient City and the Prehistoric settlement of Akrotiri. Santorini also has a unique heritage of traditional folk architecture and sophisticated fortification settlements. The climate of the island is cool due to the northeast winds and the winter is sweet and mild with an average temperature of 10oC. Rains are frequent in the winter and almost non-existent in the summer. The soil is fertile and favors the cultivation of vineyards and tomatoes. Today Santorini numbers 7,000 permanent residents scattered in about 10 villages. Fira is the capital of the island and Oia, one of its most beautiful villages known all over the world for its impressive and enchanting sunset. Its “black” beaches, with steep slopes and volcanic rocks give the island a special figure.
