5 Days – Departures:

  • 27 February 2020

  • 21, 25 March 2020

Madrid may not be one of the cities you will fall in love with from the first moment, but it will not take long before it wins your heart when you take the time to wander around its neighborhoods, visit its museums, hang around its bars or just sunbathe in Plaza Mayor. One of the Spanish capital’s strong cards are its rhythms and amazing food. The variety of architectural styles will also impress you: the buildings of the Habsburg era (around the Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa) are intertwined with the baroque Bourbon era and their neoclassical lines of the 18th century. A multifaced city, reflecting to all tastes: for expensive shopping head to the prestigious Salamanca neighborhood, while for street fashion and alternative designers on the streets of Hortaleza and Fuencarral. On Sunday, on the other hand, street shopping enthusiasts crowd into El Rastro, the grand bargain on the streets of the bohemian district of Lavapies. And on the other hand, Velasquez, El Greco, Goya, Bos, Picasso, Dali and Miro: a walk to the «mile of the museums» is never enough to fill them, with queues for the coveted ticket for El Greco’s works , the famous «Guernica» of Picasso and not only are endless. Everything here is about food and fun – the cafes on the squares and the big sidewalks are full all day. When the Spanish say «go for tapas», they mean a route from one tapas bar to another for a glass of wine and their specialties, with most concentrating on the Plaza de Santa Ana and the La Latina area. This can take hours and the wines –and the appetizers respectively– reach ten! If you are now interested in nightlife, the bars of the once degraded neighborhood of Chueca, which has evolved into a gay barrio and a center of evening entertainment,  is the place to be.

1st Day

Meeting at the airport and flight to the impressive capital of Spain. Built at an altitude of 650 meters, it dominates the central plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, in Castile. Since 1561 the capital of the country with a population of 4.000.000. Arrival transfer and accommodation at the hotel. Time for rest or for a first stroll. For the afternoon we suggest you to optionally take the time to get to know some of Madrid's many points of interest, (beyond what we will see in our planned tour with its Museums). In collaboration with our office leader, get to know Madrid of the Bourbons, its northern districts with the stunning Real stadium, the Santiago Bernabeu and Puerta de Europa, the Plaza de Toros, the Arena of the city, the Plaza Colón with the Archaeological Museum and the elegant shops of the Barrio de Salamanca, the square of Spain with the giant sculpture of Miguel de Cervantes, the famous Egyptian monument Debod, the Retiro park and many others the most historic square of the city, the Plaza Mayor.
2nd Day

Our morning tour will reveal to us a small part of the wealth of the most important Art Gallery in the world (PRADO). Over 10.000 works belonging to its collection offer a unique journey into Time and Color. We will enjoy the masterpieces of El Greco, Velasquez, Goya “standing” next to other equally important painters. Then we will walk in the narrow streets of the heart of Madrid. The famous Barrio de las Letras, one of the most bohemian districts in the whole of Europe, where many of the great painters and writers of Spain lived and created. Our tour will end with the medieval part of the city, in Madrid of the Habsburgs. Afternoon free.
3rd Day

After breakfast departing for the “City of Three Cultures”, Toledo, a city of great historical, artistic and cultural heritage. We will wander through the narrow streets of the medieval city and visit the Cathedral, a unique building of great artists and a mixture of many architectural styles, where we will see paintings by El Greco, of priceless value, such as the Expolio and the Apostles collection. Next the church of St. Thomas, where we will admire El Greco's masterpiece “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz”. Then we visit a factory with «Damasquinado», a well-known Toledanic art from the time of the Arabs. Return to Madrid. For the afternoon, we recommend a last shopping stroll in the elegant quarter of Barrio de Salamanca, a cafe in the atmospheric Plaza de Oriente overlooking the palace or simply wander through the narrow streets of the old city, ending up with the impressive Plaza Mayor for a hot chocolate.
4th Day

After breakfast we depart for Segovia, the town of Queen Isabel's old capital of Castile. Segovia is located in Spain's most impressive location. The old town is built on a rocky hill and is surrounded by the rivers Eresma and Clamores. From afar it looks like a ship, with the medieval fortress forming the bow, the turrets of the gothic temple rising like masts and the aqueduct at the back reminiscent of a rudder. The sunset, the view of the old town from the valley is magnificent. In Segovia there are many churches, a cathedral dating from 1525, the museum of Segovia with engravings from the Stone age as well as tools, constructions, coins, etc. You can also see the aqueduct and the ALCAZAR rising like a fairytale castle. Return to Madrid late in the afternoon.
