Kastorio is a green mountain village in the prefecture of Laconia at an altitude of 500 meters, which extends to the east side of North Taygetus and is 17 km from Sparta (20 minutes) and 225 km from Athens (about 3 hours). It belongs to the Municipality of Sparta while before it was the seat of the former Municipality of Pellana and is a picturesque village of Peloponnese. It has a population of 600 inhabitants in winter and about 2000 during the summer. Kastorio covers the needs of its inhabitants and neighboring villages in services and shops. In recent years, new shops, hostels, new cultural and sports events have been opened and are supported by residents and active clubs, so Kastoreio is taking its first tourist steps and more and more people are getting to know the pristine North Taygetus!
Meeting at our offices at 07:10 and departure at 07:30.
Our first stop for coffee in Ardami (180 km from Athens) through a beautiful route enjoying traditional villages and a nature that enchants you. The villages of Pardali, Koniditsa, Sellasia, Pellana are some of the many villages that we will encounter in our passage.
And finally we reach where God loved caviar, in Kastoreio.
Kastoreio is a green mountain village with amazing architecture and a beautiful square, at an altitude of 500 meters, on the north side of Taygetus in the prefecture of Laconia. It has traditional restaurants, cafes and shops where you can buy local products (olive oil, nuts, walnuts, chestnuts and from the fish farm caviar, smoked and fresh trout and salmon).
Among other things, we will see the springs of Agios Mama, the old watermill, the trout and salmon fish farm where the first caviar in Greece is produced (they were the ones who helped in the film production of the movie “God loved caviar”). We will walk on the bridge and on the banks of the Castor River that crosses the Castor Gorge with hiking trails where we will admire the rich vegetation of chestnuts and walnuts in a unique landscape.
We will visit the small church of Misosporitissa built in a cave that was a hermitage of Agios Theoklitos.
Enjoy your lunch in the traditional taverns with dishes of the hour, trout from the fish farm, wined rooster and many other traditional delicacies.
On the way back we will visit Nafplio for coffee. Return to Athens with the best impressions from this unknown side of Taygetus.
