Meeting at 07:15 in the morning at our office and departure at 07:30 for Kalavrita with a stopover for coffee.
We will pass through Diakopto and ascend to the Mega Cave which is located in an impressive landscape at the entrance of a natural cave and at a height of 924 meters. It was built in 362 by the Thessalonian brothers, Symeon and Theodoros who each saw separately an apparition with the order to go to Achaia and find the holy image of the Virgin Mary made of mastic and wax, made by the Evangelist Luke. The walls of the church in the monastery are covered with frescoes from 1653. Manuscript Gospels and vestments are also kept there.
Our next stop is the monastery of Agia Lavra, founded in the 10th century by a hermit. It was completely burned by the Turks in 1585 and 1827 and by the Germans in 1943. In 1821 it was the center of the National Uprising against the Ottomans with the raising of the Banner, which is still kept here and the swearing in of the fighters by the Germanos of Old Patras. We will also visit the Holocaust memorial.
We continue to the city of Kalavryta with its amazing natural beauty, which is considered a milestone in the history of modern Greece. We will see the clock of the Metropolitan Church in the center of the square, which is stopped at the time of the execution of the men of the city, the museum of the Holocaust and the Palace of Palaiologina, which is probably built by Thomas Palaiologos. Free time for lunch in the city and shopping in the local shops of the area. Then we will board the train railway and at 15:28 we will depart through a magical route in the gorge of Vouraikos for Diakopto. Departure for Athens with intermediate stops.
