Skopelos is another beautiful island of the Sporades, the second island in the series after Skiathos. It has an area of about 96 sq. Km. and a 67 km perimeter. In ancient times it was called Peparithos and was famous for its wine. The renaming of the island to today’s name, Skopelos, took place during Hellenistic times. Full of thick forests covering almost 80% of its area, it is considered to be the greenest island of the Aegean. It has perfect blue beaches, with pine trees reaching the sand, and the contact with nature at every step is a delightful experience. It is worth visiting Chora with its castle and its villages to enjoy its drink, coffee or food in a beautiful and tranquil setting. The first beachfront that somebody meets coming out of the town of Skopelos is Stafylos, one of the most famous and crowded beaches of the island. Another beach is Milia. It could be characterized exotic as it has fine pebbles and transparent turquoise waters. Panormos is a large, windy bay with pebbled shores and crystal clear waters that deepen almost as soon as you enter the sea. In Skopelos Chora, you will wander through the small picturesque streets where you will ascend for the Venetian Castle dating back to the 13th century. There are, of course, only remnants of its walls, but it is worth it as you will be able to admire the wonderful view from there.
